Standing committees are permanent, ongoing committees appointed by the Village President and confirmed by the Village Board to review matters and make recommendations on specific topics like finance, public works, or personnel. They provide focused oversight and expert advice to the full board on subjects within their jurisdiction, helping to guide policy development, budget decisions, and operational management for the village. There are 3 standing committees in the Village: Finance/Personnel, Public Safety, and Public Works.
Finance/Personnel Committee
The Finance/Personnel Committee is an advisory body to the Village Board. Key duties include assisting with the annual budget, financial planning, personnel matters like salaries and benefits, and long-term financial goals. The committee advises on financial policies, human resource issues, and budget adherence, working with village staff to develop reports and oversee financial strategies.
The Finance/Personnel Committee consists of 3 Village Trustees. The Village President is the ex officio chairperson along with 2 other Trustees who are appointed by the Village President and subject to confirmation by a majority vote of the Village Board.
Regular Finance/Personnel meetings are held on the Third Tuesday of each month at 5:00 pm at the Village Hall.

Public Safety Committee
The Public Safety Committee advises the Village Board on matters of safety, including police, fire, rescue, court, licenses, and permits. The committee collaborates with the Police Department to address staffing, equipment needs, and regulatory issues, providing recommendations for a safe and resilient community.
The Public Safety Committee consists of 3 Village Trustees. The members are appointed by the Village President and subject to confirmation by a majority vote of the Village Board. The Chair is designated by the Village President.
Regular meetings are held on the Second Monday day of each month at 5:00 pm at the Village Hall.

Public Works Committee
The Public Works Committee is responsible for overseeing the essential services and infrastructure that keep the Village of Somerset running smoothly. This committee reviews and makes recommendations to the Village Board on matters related to streets/transportion, water utility, wastewater/sewer, and parks/recreation.
The Public Works Committee consists of 3 Village Trustees. The members are appointed by the Village President and subject to confirmation by a majority vote of the Village Board. The Chair is designated by the Village President.
Regular meetings are held on the Second Wednesday of each month at 5:30 pm at the Village Hall.

Board of Review
The Board of Review (BOR) includes four (4) members: the Village President, the Village Clerk and two (2) members of the Village Board to be appointed by the Village President subject to the approval of the full Village Board. The BOR reviews property tax assessments to ensure fairness and accuracy, serving as the first step in the property owner's formal appeal process. The BOR meets annually which is also attended by the Village Assessor.

Board of Zoning Appeals
The Zoning Board of Appeals consists of five (5) citizen members and two (2) alternate members, appointed by the Village President subject to confirmation by the Village Board, for a three (3) year term of office. The Board of Appeals applies local zoning ordinances and state laws by hearing and deciding appeals from administrative decisions, granting special exceptions for uses not automatically permitted, and authorizing variances when strict enforcement would cause practical difficulty or unnecessary hardship on a property.
Meetings are scheduled on an as-need basis.

Plan Commission
The Plan Commission is comprised of two Village Trustees and five citizen members. It is an advisory committee, not a decision making committee. The Commission makes recommendations to the Village Board on matters such as, but not limited to, comprehensive planning and land use issues.
Regular meetings are held on the First Thursday of each month at 6:00 pm at the Village Hall.
